Getting Ready

We’d like to provide you with as much information as possible in preparing for your EEG testing. The goal of the testing or EEG data acquisition is to acquire a sufficient quantity of high quality EEG data for analysis. For best results, we recommend the following:

  1. Get a good night’s sleep - drowsiness will result in bad data

  2. Eat a healthy breakfast. Avoid stimulants such as coffee or sugar drinks. Eat lunch as appropriate.

  3. No wigs, toupees, hair pieces or hair extensions.

  4. No braids, corn-rows, etc.; hair should be combed out as flat and as straight as possible.

  5. No hair spray, lacquer, gels, conditioners, etc. All must be washed out prior to recording.

  6. No makeup on forehead.

  7. No morning coffee, tea, cokes, caffeinated or power drinks.

  8. No morning cigarettes, cigars, pipes, etc.

  9. No contact lenses. Please remove them before starting the recording as they cause excessive blinking.

  10. No jewelry - no necklaces or earrings.

Shampooing Instructions

Wash your hair the night before the EEG. Do not wash your hair on the day of your testing. Use plain shampoo and avoid conditioner or shampoo/conditioner combination.

Clothing

Wear comfortable, loose clothing which will allow you to relax.

Time

The amount of time it takes to record the amount of data needed for good analysis varies depending upon the quality of the data being recorded. Generally, allow approximately 1 hour.

Hookup

  • Areas on your forehead, scalp, and ears may be cleaned using alcohol and a skin cleaner.

  • A snug fitting cap with sensors will be placed over your head and possibly secured with straps.

  • A gel will be used to make connection between the cap sensors and the skin of your scalp.

  • The quality of the connection is monitored and must be maintained to ensure a quality recording.

Recording

After the sensors are connected, you will be asked to relax while sitting in a comfortable chair. Data will be recorded for approximately twenty minutes with your eyes closed.

Cleanup

A paper towel or wash/wipe will be used to remove any residual gel. All gels used can be washed out with normal soap/shampoo and water.
