Dialectical Behavior Therapy for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

DBT was originally developed to help clients struggling with borderline personality disorder (BPD). Many of these clients also have PTSD, and vice versa. DBT helps clients analyze their emotional and psychological issues and teaches them to enact new behaviors. It encourages clients to identify their emotional experiences and manage them through the skills they learn and practice in therapy. DBT teaches mindfulness, interpersonal effectiveness, distress tolerance and emotional regulation skills with real-life scenarios. With DBT-PTSD, clients are guided to transfer these skills from therapy to real life and use them to cope with the symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, anxiety and co-occurring mental and emotional issues.

At the end of the program, participants will be better able to:

  • Define how DBT-PTSD treats co-occurring complex PTSD in clients diagnosed with borderline personality disorder (BPD)

  • Learn and practice techniques used to address severe dissociative states during exposure

  • Identify one to two ways that DBT-PTSD treatment modality can be integrated into participants' clinical work

This training is free to clinicians. Fro 2 CEs, there's a $25 charge. Checks preferable, made out to Mind Therapy Clinic

Teachings are appropriate for healthcare professionals as well as the general public. Healthcare professionals will be able to incorporate the tools and practices offered in this program in ways beneficial to clients or patients.

About the Presenter

Katy Tarella, LCSW, serves as assistant clinical director of Mind Therapy Clinic and brings her expertise in borderline personality disorder treatment to clients in the Bay Area from her previous position at McLean Hospital in Belmont, MA. Her focus on both learning from and collaborating with the foremost experts in the field of treating personality disorders has shaped Katy's clinical approach to be a curious and engaged observer, and a life-long learner. Her therapeutic work is truly with her clients, and she values the experience of doing the work together - exploring and addressing the broad range of life experiences from struggles to triumphs.

Katy is a licensed clinical social worker, trained in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Mentalization-Based Therapy (MBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (DBT-PTSD), MBT for families, and General Psychiatric Management (GPM). Her integrated therapeutic approach allows her to extend flexibility with each client in understanding and treating their particular needs.
Katy works with adolescents, adults, families and couples to help restore mental health, well-being, understanding and balance to important relationships. Together with her clients, she focuses on teaching the skills necessary to regulate and manage emotions, as well as helping them shape a life driven by one's values. Along the way, she also works with them to accept the reality, loss and intense emotions that come up as part of the therapeutic process.

Katy holds a Master's degree in Social Work from Simmons College, in Boston, MA and her post-graduate training was completed at McLean Hospital's Borderline Personality Disorder Training Institute. In her free time, you can find Katy spending time with her two Bernese Mountain Dogs, trying to master the perfect sheet of brownies, or olympic weightlifting as her form of exercise and mindfulness.
