Understanding Alternative Sex & Sexuality

In this workshop, we will examine the full range of variation in sexual lifestyles and practices, and the ways in which being a member of a sexual minority can generate problems that may need to be addressed in therapy. We will learn some of the language people have developed to navigate their identities and the relationships they choose, and the types of relationships and families each group tends to form. We will look at the emotional costs of maintaining a closet, and the difficulties many people may have with self-esteem and with feeling free to manifest their sexuality in the ways that work for them.

We will look at the communities that people in sexual minorities have formed to support their lifestyles. We will also look at ways to deal with our own reactions to sexual identities and practices we may be unfamiliar with.

Participants will learn:

  • Some of the survival tools members of various sexual minorities have developed

  • Ways to work with internalized oppression and horizontal hostilities and the anxieties consequent to maintaining closets

  • Ways to stay present with clients whose lifestyle may seem unusual to us, and how to make decisions about appropriate therapy that will be useful for them.

This training is appropriate for health care professionals who will be able to incorporate the program's tools and practices in ways beneficial to clients or patients.
